Hi Nancy, I have learned so much by exploring this topic through writing. Forced me or should I say given me the opportunity to think, learn and articulate something I am not naturally gifted in. That paying attention to what isn't being said is powerful and one I try to remember. Often in a group that helps too - to observe what in the process isn't being recognized or spoke. Hope you are having a wonderful week.

Very helpful suggestions, here, Jean. Especially appreciate the ice-breaker questions and the tips for becoming a better listener. My favorite question (which I'll keep in my back pocket for the next small-talk opportunity): "What's the farthest you've ever been from home?" Lots of possibilities for getting the conversation going, I think. My favorite tip: Pay attention to what is NOT being expressed. Now THAT's really listening--not just with the ears, but with the mind and heart as well. Thank you, Jean, for encouraging us and challenging us to be superb contributing members of the community, wherever we may be.

Hi Jean,

Thanks for your post here. I especially liked the question you heard about "What brings you joy lately?" Hmm... I came here right after reading Lisa Notes' post on the new Turquoise Table book that came out by ___? and these two ideas go well together in my mind. Thanks. :)

I really think active listening is one of the key to community. a deeper connection, acceptance of the other. They will sense it and respond. We are in an age of no civil debate, just arguing and talking louder than the other person. sigh. and yes it is a priceless gift to give to somebody. Tell Danny congrats on his buy out and retirement. wonderful news!

Jean, you really got me here with the letting of to-do lists and other distractions fill my head when I should be listening attentively to what someone is saying. Although I understand fully the concept of truly listening to another, it isn't always what I consciously do, though I'm better than I used to be. It does take practice, doesn't it? And it's all worthwhile. There is no better gift we can give someone than to be fully present for them. Blessings!
