What an important and thought-provoking post, Jean. If I had to guess what the most constant and consistent prayer sprinkled throughout my journals over the years, I'd bet it is something like "Please guide me, Lord," "Please help me discern, Lord," etc. etc. I've even been known to ask for burning, talking bushes, knowing full well if I got one, I'd dismiss it as being my imagination. Oh how annoying I must be to God sometimes!

I love your suggestions here and plan to re-read and implement some of them into my own discernment process.

By the way, I'm also testing your new Comments plugin. :-)

I most often seek the wisdom of mature Christians I respect and ask them to pray through the possibilities with me. Sometimes I've made a list of pros and cons for a decision, asking God to help me think through the possibilities. Then I've weighted each factor: highly important, somewhat important, or less important. I pray my way through that too. Last I add up the scores to see which column "wins"--the pros or the cons. But I think you're right, Jean: we often experience a feeling in our gut (another name for spirt?!) for the choice God would have us make. And if we've made a godly choice, a sense of peace does accompany the choice--peace that surpasses understanding,
