When our children were babies, and I would leave them in the church nursery or with a sitter, they would cry and reach their little arms out to me. I felt terrible, causing them such misery. (Of course, nursery workers and sitters assured me that the fussing stopped once I was out of sight.) Then my babies grew into preschoolers. When I dropped them off at this stage, their response was, “Bye, Mommy!” And off they would run to play. I STILL felt terrible, because now they didn’t seem to care whether I left or stayed! What I should have focused on was their growing maturity.

Thanks, Jean, for the worthy reminder: We can’t control circumstances, like children growing from one stage to another, but we can control how we respond!
