Hi Nicholas, you are so right. I have read about these latter Beguines and failed to mention them. They too deserved recognition. I appreciate you adding this to the conversation. Thank you so much for this and leaving a comment. Great to connect with you!

"The Beguines lived in the mid-twelfth and thirteenth centuries......Next Thursday we will explore the lives of......this fascinating group of women from the middle ages."

"Twelfth and thirteenth centuries"? "Middle Ages"? Well - yes, but not exactly. For some reason, you fail to mention that convents of Beguines existed into the 21st century! The last traditional Beguine sister, Marcella Pattyn, died in Belgium in 2013 at the age of 92. Do a Google image search for these sisters and you'll see many photos of them.

There were so many of them too and we only know a few names and stories. Interesting very brave committed women! I think their story is inspirational. Hope you enjoy the series.

With Ceil I must say I've never heard of the Beguines. I'm already intrigued! And I agree with Martha's observation: the sanctioned church of the time, Roman Catholicism, probably did not appreciate their independence and writings. (Should women be allowed to write?!) I'll look forward to reading the stories of some of these women next week.

I will try to read them, but we'll be in the mountains. I try to go "dark" when we're on vacation. Blessings!

I just loved the Beguines once I knew about them. Some of their writings are really different though - typically of the middle ages but I certainly admire them for stepping out of their normal comfort zones and following God. Lots of lessons for us in their stories.

Can't have independent women you know. I think that is one reason why this group means something to me. What till you read some of their stories next week.
courageous women!

Hi Jean! I have not heard of the Beguines, this was fascinating. Quite the independent thinkers. Makes me wonder if their families were very pleased with their decision to join the group.
Attacking and trying to control thought is as old as the hills, and although this story isn't new, it is sad. Sounds like they did wonderful things and were interested in serving. What could be so threatening about that?
Blessings,
Ceil

This will be a fascinating study, Jean! I can see why the church cracked down on this group of independent thinkers - not under the thumb of the Roman Catholic church.
Blessings!
