God’s Gifts – Lectio Divina

November 16, 2014 By Jean Wise

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property.

To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.

But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.

Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

(Matthew 25:14-21, ESV)

Lord you are the giver of all gifts.

Please take away any fear that stops me from using the talents you have given me.

Open my eyes to see all that you have abundantly lavished upon my life.

The only reward I seek is to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

For I am your servant Lord.

I am to do your bidding with what you entrusted to me. You expect me to discover, develop and draw upon these gifts.

These are not MY gifts, but yours.

For I am your servant Lord.

Forgive the times when I don’t think I have enough – enough skill, time or ability to serve you.

These gifts are meant to be used – grant me courage to use them for your glory. Help me to take risks in reaching out. Let me not bury them away for safe keeping out of selfishness and fear.

For I am your servant Lord.

I long to be like the first two servants, Lord, using up every grain, tidbit and ounce of talent for your kingdom.

Free me from laziness, selfishness and greed.

Lead me to wholehearted servant hood, taking care of your gifts you have entrusted into my heart and hands.

May I come before you – empty, cleared and depleted – nothing wasted – giving all to you, for you.

Hi Jean! I have always loved this passage from Scripture. I think it shows me how important my talents are, whether I think I have a lot or a little. It’s all the same to Him. And the key is to find them, grow them, use them.
    I know I can’t hear that enough.
    Happy Monday 🙂

You know Ceil, the third man sticks with me this year – Was he so wrong by being honest with the master? Is the master too harsh and not really how I like to visualize the Lord. Amazing how a well known parable like this continues to teach us isn’t it? Happy Monday to you too
