I Am Becoming a Person Who…

April 30, 2024 By Jean Wise

becoming

I am becoming a person who… how would you complete this open-ended sentence?

As a spiritual director I like to collect prompts like this one plus wonderful assortment of thought-provoking questions to use as I listen in sacred space with another soul. I often find these nudges also linger into my heart too.

What a good spiritual practice to try that invites a quiet reflection and life review. I like the emphasis on the word “becoming” as it gives me hope in what could be and permission to try again when I fail.

Here are a few of my reflections on where I am at this season of my life:

I am becoming a person who notices and names her emotions better now as I live in this second half of my life.

I am becoming a person who is learning to value being with people even as an introvert.

I am becoming a person who knows her limits and boundaries.

I am becoming a person who knows herself well enough to know it’s important to keep showing up even when I don’t feel like it.

I am becoming a person who recognizes when fear raises her voice, listens to her lessons but doesn’t allow her to make the final decision.

I am becoming a person who can hold uncertainty easier.

I am becoming a person who knows each day is a gift and I am grateful for even the small things in life.

I am becoming a person who realizes when I quit striving and trying to get things done and take the time to pause and look, I see God in all things.

I am becoming a person who is slowly, very slowly, learning how much God accepts and loves her and to open my heart to accept and love herself too.

Try this practice. What did you notice or learn about yourself?

Thank you for the thought-provoking, hope-inducing question, Jean. I am becoming a person who can think a bit longer before acting, a person who can hold her tongue a bit better and keep some thoughts to myself!

Jean, this is a marvelous question we should all ponder as we are on this journey with the Lord. I pray often that I am becoming less of me and more of Him every day, in small ways and big.
Thanks for your prayers for Danny!

I love this–and I think the writing group I facilitate will love this, too.
I will begin my list with “I am becoming a person who values spaciousness.”
