“You never know what may cause them.
The sight of the Atlantic Ocean can do it, or a piece of music, or a face you’ve never seen before.
A pair of somebody’s old shoes can do it.
Almost any movie made before the great sadness that came over the world after the Second World War,
a horse cantering across a meadow,
the high school basketball team running out onto the gym floor at the start of a game.
You can never be sure.
But of this you can be sure.
Whenever you find tears in your eyes, especially unexpected tears, it is well to pay the closest attention.
They are not only telling you something about the secret of who you are,
but more often than not God is speaking to you through them of the mystery of where you have come from and
is summoning you to where,
if your soul is to be saved,
you should go next.
Interesting how books/words can bring tears. Maybe God is inviting you to something too. I know there are several social justice issue that well tears up for me and I keep praying for that open door He is leading me too
That song sounds wonderful and very true. I have read this quote in the past and it touched me; thought it was time to share it on the blog.
When tears well up, it’s often out of gratitude and praise for what God has done; elation for His palpable presence; wonder at His voice speaking to me through the Word, creation, music, a book. Buechner was right. Each time the tears come, they indicate where I’m going next: one step closer to my Heavenly Father.
Oh, my..so true…cried Thurs as I heard this song and the lyrics about giving God our ashes for beauty…and just gratitude for His great love for me…hugs to you 🙂
Mia, you are so right. Many of us don’t cry at all due to what others may think. I am usually NOT a tearful person so when I hear or see something that does draw tears, I have learned to embrace that moment and listen deeply to what else is going one.
May you have a blessed Holy week, dear friend
Dear Jean
Such wisdom in these words and yet we sometimes feel embarrassed by them!! Humans!
