What comes to your mind when you read the phrase “Divine Flow”? To me, flow implies a continuous, open movement, back and forth between two entities. If you are “in the zone” you are immersed and experience energy and delight. Things that flow merged and become one. Divine of course means of God or with God. I yearn for divine flow. Perhaps this deep desire within me is one reason why Brian Plachta’s new book attracted me. Its title is Divine Flow: Reclaiming the Lost Art of Contemplation for Every Day and today this new book became available wherever books are sold. Plachta is a spiritual director and pastoral counselor with more than 30 years of experience Plachta writes, “Divine Flow is a modern way of describing the contemplative path—a lifestyle rooted in presence and inner stillness that nurtures and sustains a deep, personal relationship with God. It invites you to move from merely knowing about God to experiencing God—in the quiet, in the heart, and in the flow of … [Read more...]
Project Hail Mary
My new favorite book/movie: Project Hail Mary. I am obsessed with this charming and inspiring story right now. I have read the book twice. Watched the movie only once so far but have been binging on movie clips of various scenes on YouTube. I am not much of a movie theater attender or a fiction reader so my reaction to this story has fascinated me. I love the very likeable characters. The inspiring and thoughtful themes. The laugh aloud humor. The smartness of this story. The friendship. The optimism even when times are rough. This movie/book has heart and somehow speaks straight into my soul. I have learned to notice when something resonates deeply within me. Pay attention when my soul is stirred – either in a positive or jarring way. My spiritual director reminded me to listen to my tears. Frederick Buechner wrote this about tears: “You never know what may cause them. The sight of the Atlantic Ocean can do it, or a piece of music, or a face you've never seen before. A pair … [Read more...]
World Book Day
Did you know April 23 is World Book Day? The national celebration of reading and of books is run by The Reading Agency, a national charity that inspires people to become confident and enthusiastic readers. April 23, 1564, is the day English poet, playwright William Shakespeare was born. Fifty-three short years later, also on April 23, 1616, the playwright died. For this reason, among others, it was a natural choice for UNESCO to create World Book Day to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this day. So what books have you been reading lately? Here are a few I have completed and one on order that I hear great things about and can’t wait to read. Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary was a wonderful read. I usually don’t read fiction, but this one was inspiring, funny, and a delight to read. I now want to see the movie too. The Book of Longings by Susan Monk Kidd. What if Jesus had a wife? This book explores a possibly story about this. This gave me new … [Read more...]
Walking Year Long with a LampLighter
I like the term Lamplighter. I learned this word from wisdom teacher mystic Cynthia Bourgeault who described the spiritual teachers in her life – both ancient and contemporary – as lamplighters, those lighting the way for her path. Isn’t that a cool way of describing people of faith? I love this word and have learned like electric wires lamplighters bringing light into my soul, I too have lamplighters, even a few high-tension ones that boost my spirit beyond the ordinary. Highly charged lamplighters for me are Henri Nouwen, Teresa of Avilla, and Barbara Brown Taylor. In 2003 in my first class to become a spiritual director, they encouraged us to choose (or did that person choose us?) one person to “walk” with for the next three years. We would read about that person, their story, and their spiritual journey. How did faith shape their life? How did they discern which way to go? What worked and what didn’t? We read what others wrote about that person and if … [Read more...]
Secrets of Adulthood – Gretchen’s and Mine
Gretchen Rubin just published a wonderful new book titled “Secrets of Adulthood – Simple Truths for our Complex Lives.” This is a collection of inspirational quotes that will delight your soul, make you think, and offer you wisdom and insight. A book to consider as a gift for Mother’s Day, graduation or birthday. Here are some examples: So what would you write as YOUR Secrets for Adulthood to pass on to others. I think this could be a great practice for each of us to write out in our journal to leave as a legacy for our children. Or to have as a family or friend conversation around the table. This is the type of topic that wouldn’t be one and done either but one that would start and be added to over the years. Here are a few I initially started: Looking Up Just the physical act of lifting your chin and looking up, raises your spirit. But looking up also holds many spiritual lessons too. I find looking up throughout the day - to nature, to the heavens, outside of … [Read more...]
Communicator’s Companion Birthday
Today I am celebrating the birthday of one of the books I wrote and published in 2017, The Communicator’s Companion: Devotions for Speakers and Writers. Usually, I shy away from promoting my own books but today I thought I would share this book just in case you might know someone who is a speaker or writer and could use a littler encouragement. Maybe this book could help them. Here is the description of the book: “Writers and speakers love words. Words are their tools. Communicators recognize the power of one word to be able to inspire, comfort, teach, and literally and through literal means, change lives. The Communicator’s Companion contains 40 devotions based on various communication roles and words. These reflections will nourish Christian speakers and writers' faith. This new and expanded edition of devotionals for Christian communicators offers encouragement, insight, and grace for the creative work of spreading God’s message of love to others. Discover the numerous ways … [Read more...]
Creating A Rule of Life – A New Book is Born
Creating a Rule of Life is one of the most popular downloads and posts on this blog. I can see when people download a pdf of a resource from one of the past pages on a post on a topic and journaling and rule of life continue to be two main interests of people seeking more information. I wrote a first draft of a book about writing a rule of life during the pandemic – a very rough first draft and took that awful outline out of hiding from its dark closet last January, dusted it off, reworked its words, gently sent it to an editor to rework and shine and polish and get it ready for the world and guess what? Creating a Rule of Life, A Manual for Dancing to Divine Rhythms is ready to be released next Tuesday July 29 on Amazon. Here is its summary: Are you curious about the spiritual practice called a “rule of life” and how can we build order and disciplines into our daily lives? Creating a personal rule of life helps us abide closer to God and live in sync with God’s rhythms … [Read more...]
Book Birthday – Spiritual Retreats: A Guide to Slowing Down to be with God
Spiritual Retreats: A Guide to Slowing Down to be with God by yours truly was first published in May 2016. I have never celebrated a book birthday before and thought it would be fun to revisit this book, its message and its birth. Happy Birthday, Spiritual Retreat little book! Spiritual Retreats: A Guide to Slowing Down to be with God came about through a conversation with a friend who was fascinated by my annual attending retreats compounded by my enthusiasm for the practice of going on retreat. She hesitated to go, not knowing what to expect and if this practice was worth her time. I did explain many of the details to her, but then realized others may also feel that way. I recalled my first time on retreat: how anxious I was about the locations, the agenda, what to do with all that silence. So I outlined a book. Spiritual Retreats: A Guide to Slowing Down to be with God is small, only 54 pages, easy to read, and divided into three parts:*Before the retreat*During the … [Read more...]
