A Native American Prayer – Give Us Hearts To Understand

June 29, 2013 By Jean Wise

Here is a great Native American Prayer to enrich your devotions: Give us hearts to understand;   Never to take from creation's beauty more than we give;   never to destroy wantonly for the furtherance of greed;   Never to deny to give our hands for the building of earth's beauty;   never to take from her what we cannot use.   Give us hearts to understand   That to destroy earth's music is to create confusion;   that to wreck her appearance is to blind us to beauty;   That to callously pollute her fragrance is to make a house of stench;   that as we care for her she will care for us.   We have forgotten who we are.   We have sought only our own security.   We have exploited simply for our own ends.   We have distorted our knowledge.   We … [Read more...]

The Long View – Oscar Romero – Quote of the Week

June 22, 2013 By Jean Wise

It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view.
The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,
 it is beyond our vision.
We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction
of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.Nothing we do is complete,
which is another way of saying that
the kingdom always lies beyond us.

No statement says all that could be said.
No prayer fully expresses our faith.
No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness.
No program accomplishes the church’s mission.
No set of goals and objectives includes everything. That is what we are about:
We plant seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything and
there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.
This enables us to do something, and to do it very well.
It may be incomplete,
but it is … [Read more...]

Listen to me.”Teach me to listen, my caring God,To those far from me –The whisper of the hopeless,The plea of the forgotten,The cry of the anguished.Teach me to listen, O God my Mother,To myself.Help me to be less afraidTo trust the voice inside –In the deepest part of meTeach me to listen, Holy Spirit,For your voice-In busyness and in boredom,In certainty and in doubt, In noise and in silence.Teach me, Lord, to listen.  Amen    - adapted from St Ignatius by John Veltri SJ … [Read more...]

Native American Prayer – Quote of the Week

April 20, 2013 By Jean Wise

blank

Earth teach me stillness        as the grasses are stilled with light. Earth teach me suffering        as old stones suffer with memory. Earth teach me humility        as blossoms are humble with beginning. Earth teach me caring        as the mother who secures her young. Earth teach me courage        as the tree which stands all alone. Earth teach me limitation        as the ant which crawls on the ground. Earth teach me freedom        as the eagle which soars in the sky. Earth teach me resignation        as the leaves which die in the fall. Earth teach me regeneration        as the seed which rises in the spring. Earth teach me to forget myself        as melted snow forgets its life. Earth teach me to remember kindness        as dry fields weep with rain. — Ute prayer … [Read more...]

Lenten Prayer – Henri Nouwen

February 16, 2013 By Jean Wise

blank

Lenten Prayer The Lenten season begins. It is a time to be with you, Lord, in a special way, a time to pray, to fast, and thus to follow you on your way to Jerusalem, to Golgotha, and to the final victory over death. I am still so divided. I truly want to follow you, but I also want to follow my own desires and lend an ear to the voices that speak about prestige, success, pleasure, power, and influence. Help me to become deaf to these voices and more attentive to your voice, which calls me to choose the narrow road to life. I know that Lent is going to be a very hard time for me. The choice for your way has to be made every moment of my life. I have to choose thoughts that are your thoughts, words that are your words, and actions that are your actions. There are not times or places without choices. And I know how deeply I resist choosing you. Please, Lord, be with me at every moment and in every place. Give me the strength and the courage to live this … [Read more...]

Mary’s Focus Only on God – Lectio Divina

December 23, 2012 By Jean Wise

blank

And Mary said:“My soul glorifies the Lordand my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be mercifulto Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”Luke 1: 46-55I am so ashamed, Lord. Please forgive me.The majority of my prayers begin with “I.”The focus is me - what I want, what I think I need, what I demand.  Often giving You orders instead of humbly reporting to duty.Even the prayers for others drip with ego.In this prayer … [Read more...]

Healing Comfort Prayer – Lectio Divina

December 16, 2012 By Jean Wise

blank

All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah!Father of all mercy!God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too.2 Corinthians 1: 3-5 (The Message)Healing ComfortI stumbled into your arms tonight, Lord.My heart plunges even further shattered in disbelief; in pieces that can’t be put back together.Lord, this evil that pervades the world overwhelms us at times.Wickedness darkens our life by snuffing out too many candles, much too soon.I am weary of senseless violence, Lord.Eradicate evil and grant us Your Goodness.Today I hold my kids a little longer.Tomorrow I will snuggle my precious grandkids. But some have empty arms … [Read more...]
