Joni and Ken – Book Review

April 18, 2013 By Jean Wise

Looking for an inspirational book to read?
I heard the story of Joni Eareckson Tada years ago. I have watched her ministry to provide wheelchairs throughout the world. I smiled when I heard she found love and married Ken. What a courageous woman she is. I admire her willingness to share her experiences and its lessons with us.
Joni and Ken – an Untold Love Story is their latest book just released by Zondervan.
Yes it is a love story but not exactly a “happily ever after” one. Joni and Ken’s 30 years of marriage has been full of challenges for both of them, but a path that has made them stronger. But like most of life, it is the day-to-day routines and problems that wears us down.
“In reality, living with quadriplegia was never normal and even the most compelling of international escapades began to fade after a while For Ken what didn’t fade was the daily-nightly-daily-nightly drudgery of Joni’s disability routines.”

Ken and Joni are honest and open about their ups and downs of their marriage. They may have felt fragile at times, but never lost their hope in God. This book brims with prayer and witness that marriage has three people: two humans and one Almighty Lord.
One of my passions is praying and supporting caregivers. This book will give the reader a real glimpse into the emotional side of caregiving and the demands emotionally, physically and spiritually they endure.
And this couple has faced problems together: Joni’s paralysis, Ken’s depression, unexpected overwhelming bouts of pain, cancer, mastectomy, chemotherapy, and pneumonia. Yet they stick to their commitment to one another and to loving and serving God.
Neat book to read!
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com <http://BookSneeze®.com> book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. It’s an easy read but very inspirational. They certainly have had their struggles but amazingly keep their hearts of God. Have a blessed weekend, Lyli

A friend at work suggested this book to me last week, and it’s on my list. I have read her autobiography and one of her devotions. She has spoken at our church a couple of times. She is an amazing woman of God… this one is on my list!

Hi Nancy, so glad you are feeling better. I too haven’t been commenting as much this week due to getting ready for a week vacation, leaving tomorrow.

    I do appreciate your comments.
Joni’s story is so amazing and what a witness.

Hi Lori, I didn’t know all her struggles either until I read this book. Very inspirational and easy read. She certainly does have challenges but always turns her hearts towards God. What a witness!

Hi Mia, I read Joni’s book a long time ago and have been fascinated by her story, courage and witness since then. I am glad she is inspiring to you too. I didn’t know about all her other struggles but again she always turns her heart towards God. What a witness for us!

We leave tomorrow for a week in New Mexico. Exciting vacation. Will be gone about a week.

    Blessings on your week ahead!

I, too, have followed Joni’s story, since her first book back in the 70s. My heart ached for her when two boyfriends abandoned her. I started praying that God would bring someone into her life, and Ken turned up a few years later!

P.S. Just so you know, I’ve been down & out again with a secondary bacterial infection, following the flu bug of ten days ago. It was all I could do to keep up with posting, but not the commenting. Hopefully the siege is over!

Interesting – I need to take a look at this book. I have only a vague idea about Joni Tada… and didn’t realize all the “extra” burdens in addition to her paralysis. Thank you for the post – I’ll check out the book!

    Dear Jean
I have always been an admirer of this couple, especially because they are just so human like anyone else and they make no secret of their utter dependence on their Pappa. She has inspired me when I was diagnosed with Fm/CFS to carry on, one day at a time to the glory of our Lord. I am going to try to purchase this book.
    Blessings
    Mia
