“What are you enjoying right now?” This was the question posed to us around a table of friends last weekend. We all paused and thought for a few minutes.
How would you answer?
Most of our immediate responses were family. Friends. Health.
Then we sat quietly again. Thinking.
What else was bringing us joy?
What a good question to hold and ponder!
I thought of how I am enjoying not having to wake up to an alarm clock every morning. I still like to get up early, but on my own slow waking, more natural time.
I love having the window open – feeling the cool morning air and hearing the birds first thing, welcoming the new day.
Oh yes, that first sip of my coffee in the morning light.
I find joy discovering words/phrases from others full of wisdom and wonder that shimmer in my soul. I love holding those words. Rewriting them. Slowly digesting them into my heart and bones. Somehow they dispel loneliness and connect me across generations and time beyond my understand. They become lights of hope forming me, leading me onward.
There is delight found in just sitting in my prayer chair – resting in God, surrounded in holy silence, solitude, stillness and peace.
I tend to overlook these tiny, somewhat hidden moments of joy, but they are everywhere. Where are you seeing and experiencing bits of joy?

I really enjoy hearing from God when I wake up very early in the morning between 3 and 5 AM… It brings me so much joy just to know that I’m in his presence and he’s in mind. I look forward to hearing from you new ideas, bringing back to my remembrance things that I have forgotten, and what he would have me to do.
Those middle of night prayer times ARE very special aren’t they?
Suc. a great question! What I enjoyed tonight was running into my daughter and her family at the same restaurant where we ended up ourselves – it’s the second time it’s happened this year!
what fun that is!! love that spontaneous interactions!! such joy!
Dear Jean, those gatherings with dear and special friends, deep conversations, genuine laughter, the building of community are such a gift from above.
For while we enjoy our solitude and silence, it prepares us to be out and about, doing life in the company of others. So good of God to lead us in this way.
Happy October, friend.
Happy October to you too, Linda!! May this month be full of joy and delight for you
I too am enjoying these cool mornings–on our deck, with Bible study materials and prayer box in tow. The birds and squirrels keep me company. Such a joy not to have to watch the clock in order to get ready for work! If I want to study or pray a little longer, I can!
ahhh the cooler mornings are delightful aren’t they? I think we both love those birds and squirrels too. so much fun to watch.
