What are you reading this summer? Since I am at my retreat as you read this post this week, I am writing this early and sharing some of the books I am enjoying this summer. I think it is always fun to get a glimpse at what others are reading. Here is my current list:
Soundtracks – The Surprising Solution to Overthinking by Jon Acuff. Jon has a terrific podcast that accompanies this book called All It Takes is a Goal. At first, I borrowed this book from our library -don’t you love our local libraries? – but liked it so much I purchases a copy so I could study and highlight his wisdom.
I am a chronic negative self-talker. My internal voices and what Jon calls “soundtracks” shout behind the scenes of my behavior and thoughts much more than most people think as I try my best to be an encourager and an optimist. This book offers great advice on how to turn down the volume and how to create and use positive thoughts/soundtracks more often in practical and very readable fashion.
A Faith Unleashed – Living in the Hope of God’s Rescue by Joshua Masters. This book shares delightful lessons from Franklin the rescue dog that applies to our spiritual life. Chapter titles include Wanted, Regular Grooming, and Old Dog, New Tricks.
A light yet deep reading that all will enjoy and also a perfect gift for the dog lover in your life. And who could resist this adorable face?

Hildegard of Bingen – Unleashing her Power in the 21st Century by Matthew Fox. Hildegard has been a ‘lamplighter” for me, an ancient one of wisdom who walks and guides us for many years. I have been hearing her invitation to reread her words and life once again and this book is coming with me on my retreat. I am looking forward to being with and learning with her.
On a lighter side I am reading once again the Harry Potter series as I love the imaginative details of this story that stirs my creativity.
What is on your summer reading list?
I just got the sample of Soundtracks sent to my Kindle this morning after hearing Jon Acuff on a podcast during the night (couldn’t sleep). 😉 Two books from my stack I’m currently reading are “Divine Echoes” and “White Awake.” Both are excellent so far.
I will have to check your two books out too. Love hearing what you read
Oops! Forgot my P.S. I’m praying for you each morning this week that this retreat stirs your heart in new ways!
Thank you so much for your prayers!
You always include such an eclectic mix of books on your reading lists, Jean! Currently I’m reading Becoming Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn (I think I have her name right. I’m out on the deck and the book is indoors. Don’t want to get up!!) I am learning SO much about this missionary heroine, even though I’ve read Through Gates of Splendor and Shadow of the Almighty. Recommend highly!
I want to read that book too. Inspirational I am sure!
Have now finished the book and can HIGHLY recommend!
What a great summer reading list, Jean! Thanks for the recommendations, and I do hope your retreat is going well.
Blessings!
Retreat is almost over. Home tomorrow. Wonderful time with God!
