A Golf Lesson for a Non-golfer

April 10, 2012 By Jean Wise

Patty Wysong has created a fun meme where once a week bloggers posted on the letter of the week. Check out the details here. It is called A2Z: Take 2. A2Z as she challenges bloggers to write a post each week going through the alphabet.  Take 2 since this is the second time she has used this meme. Anyone can join in and you don’t have to always participate. This fun meme has now progressed to the letter NN = Never Give Up!I don’t golf.I don’t like golf.I don’t watch golf.I am not even good at miniature golf.So what captivating me about Sunday’s climatic finish to the Masters Tournament? To be honest I turned on the television to watch 60 Minutes. Where was my familiar tick-tick of the beginning of the show? Oh no! Stupid golf, the big tournament called the Masters, was still being broadcast. They went into extra innings. Overtime. Ok, that isn’t what it is called, but again I don’t like golf. I laughed because when there is a tie, golfers are in sudden death. Couldn’t come soon enough for … [Read more...]

An Easter Mommyism to Remember

April 5, 2012 By Jean Wise

We all have them, tucked into our hearts and seared in our memories.Certain classic phrases our mothers said to us.  Here are a few I remember my mom proclaiming:If all your friends jumped off the bridge, would you?Don’t put that ketchup bottle on the table.God loves you and so do I.As long as you live under my roof, you'll do as I say.Close the door! You don't live in a barn. Drink your milk before all the bubbles disappear and you will have curly hair. I think the funniest and most unusual saying she had and one my kids still laugh about today is this:Wish in one hand and pee in the other and see which one you fill first.Mom didn’t want me to wish my life away. Dreams were important, but so was the hard work to achieve them.Fun Mother Mottos. But there was one axiom she said that has helped me more than once.  WAIT THREE DAYS.Mom would use this expression whenever I was depressed or discouraged or unable to make a decision. She would say, “Wait three days. Imagine what it was like for … [Read more...]

Manners – Good Manners and God Manners

Anyone can join in and you don’t have to always participate. This week’s letter is M:M = Manners1993. I was working fulltime as the county health commissioner and had the opportunity to go to NYC with two of my fellow commissioners to a national conference. We stayed in midtown Manhattan, enabling us to sightsee in between sessions. One of my strongest memories of that trip is not the Big Apple, but my traveling companion, Hans, and his impeccable manners. He held doors open for us, pulled our chairs out at the table, and walked on the curbside of the sidewalk.Do you know the origin of that last gentlemanly behavior? In olden days, chivalry called for the man to walk next to the street to act … [Read more...]

10 Provisions for Your Spiritual Journey

March 29, 2012 By Jean Wise

My husband and I traveled last week in Arizona. We didn’t know the roads or what awaited us beyond each turn in the road.  But we were loaded down with all the essentials to find our way: our GPS unit, one city and two state maps, plus the one sheet map given to us by the rental car agent. I brought along the AAA Arizona guidebook, several dozen brochures, and two sheets of Google map directions. We only got lost twice. Not bad for two Midwesterners exploring the west.I wondered what I bring along to help me find my way on my spiritual journey. Reflecting on this last night when I couldn’t sleep (my body was tired, but my mind still believed we were in the Pacific time zone) I began a list of what has helped me grow closer to God and ideas of some tools God may be inviting me to use before I get lost or stuck on a long dusty detour.  The first five I do okay with, the last five I have far to learn yet and need more practice:1.     Sitting with the Sacred – Prayer is an essential to any … [Read more...]

Lists – What’s on Your Bucket List?

This week’s letter is L:L = Lists What’s on Your Bucket List? One of the best Christian radio stations is WBCL. They have a wonderful program at 10 am each morning called Midmorning where they discuss a whole variety of topics. Last week they discuss bucket lists. What is on your bucket list?A bucket list, in case you don’t know, is a compilation of things you want to do or places to go before you kick the bucket. You take the time to ask yourself, "If I knew I were going to die next week, I would most regret not doing _______." I think the benefit of a bucket list is the power of writing out dreams. Once you see them listed before … [Read more...]

The Special Ks

On Tuesdays this year I have been having fun participating in Patty Wysong’s blog meme where once a week bloggers posted on the letter of the week. Check out the details here.  It is called A2Z: Take 2. A2Z as she challenges bloggers to write a post each week going through the alphabet.  This week’s letter is K and the letter K starts one particular word that is number one in my heart:  well that is not entirely true:  Three words to be exact.KylaKorbin KastinMeet my grandKids – three K’s and as our good friend Don nicknamed them: The Special KsKyla will be three in June and is a bubbling full of life toddler. She has been featured on this blog right after she was born and also several times when just watching her taught me spiritual lessons.  Here what I wrote the day Kyla was born about God’s whoosh sweeping into our hearts. The wonder and curiosity of little ones teaches us also. So many lessons such as celebrating our firsts in life, tooKorbin and Kastin were born July 17. We get … [Read more...]

The Tender Gaze of God – a Silent Retreat Experience

March 15, 2012 By Jean Wise

How do you describe time spent in the presence of God? First I want to thank many of you who held me in prayer when I went to the four-day silent retreat last week. I encourage you if you have never gone on retreat, whether a silent one or one filled with life-giving presentations, to try this spiritual practice. You will receive priceless nourishment for your journey in life.Even as a writer, I have difficulty finding the words to illustrate these precious quiet days with God. So I will borrow a phrase from Anthony de Mello:Look at God…looking at you… and smiling.I experienced being enfolded in the hands of God and beheld in His tender, loving, and unfailing gaze.I found this statuette and took multiple photos of this father and baby since they best represent how I felt.“You are precious in my eyes. I honor you and love you." Isaiah 43:4Often at the beginning of a retreat, the director will suggest some Bible verses that may guide us on our weekend. As soon as Susan mentioned Hagar, I … [Read more...]

Call Me Crazy

March 1, 2012 By Jean Wise

Flickr Creative CommonsMy kids think I am crazy. In fact my son-in law Austin nicknamed me “Crazy” when he was dating my daughter. And foolishly he still married her knowing daughters tend to take after their mother.I do crazy things as a mother.3 AM  - March 1986 – I dragged my kids from their cozy beds, bundled them up warmly and my husband and I drove 20 minutes to the Bryan airport. We weren’t the only crazy ones up that night to look through professional telescopes to glimpse at a once in a lifetime view of Halley’s Comet. Visible from earth every 75-76 years, this heavenly gift would not reappear until 2061. Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye from Earth. If you are lucky you may see it twice in your life. Lucky enough to have a crazy mother to drag you out of bed in the cold early spring morning to peer through a telescope to see a fuzzy cotton ball image zooming across the sky. 7 PM February 2012 -  I text my kids to look up at the sky. … [Read more...]
