Winter is my least favorite time of year. This time of year enfolds me with a sense of emptiness and loss of hope. My mood reflects the dreary gray winter sky that blanket northwest Ohio. But the last few years I see winter with new eyes and a renewed appreciation of its beauty and purpose. I am surprised at this new phenomenon and the joy I have discovered in it stark loveliness. Bird nests were the first indication of seeing winter in a new way. My eyes were drawn to them. I saw them everywhere. Tree branches, now barren, allowed me to see them where they were hidden before. Every time I looked up, multiple bird nests materialized. They beckoned me, “Look at me, I have something to tell you.” In His mysterious way, God began to invite me to wonder about these empty and barren nests. The nests were not just empty, but represented hollow vacant cups, waiting to be filled. Instead of focusing on what they did not have, they remained open, ready to hold new life that was yet … [Read more...]
The Potter’s Hands – Images of God
Reading other blogs and newsletters, many goal setters select a word or three words to guide their year. I haven’t had much luck with this idea until this year when the word – Formation – kept bubbling up in my heart. So in 2011, I am pondering the word: Formation.Yet soon images bombarded me: The Potter’s Hands. So not only do I have a word for the year, I now have an image."O Lord, you are our Father, we are the clay, you are the potter, we are all the work of your hand." Isaiah 64:8Look at these images:Lord you are so tender and loving in my formation. I trust you.Lord you know just the right place to apply pressure to form me in Your image. You will not fail me.Lord I look at Your hands, so covered with all the stuff and muck of my sinful self that hinders my growth. Thank you for removing it even if it hurts.Smooth my rough edges, Lord. I bend to Your skillful handiwork.I don't know where God is leading me with this word and these images but I will ponder them and listen.Do you … [Read more...]
New Year Anxiety or Abundance?
A year ago I was scared.Last year mark the end of a decade for me that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved telling people if I had know how good the 50s were going to be I would have rushed to them sooner. I grew as a writer and spiritually walked closer to God. My kids evolved into wonderful adults seeking their own adventures. My hubby and I both retired and open new fulfilling chapters in life. Would the 60s be as good?I was scared. But looking back, this last year has not been bad at all. I accomplished several items from my bucket list (a hot air balloon ride and finishing my Associate in Ministry requirement for the Lutheran church). Tried new recipes and saw new places. And learned a valuable lesson when a dream was dashed against the rocks that putting the broken pieces in God’s hands leads to healing.Maybe that is one reason I like the start of the new year. The energy and excitement of fresh new chapter in life. The anticipation, though with some anxiety, of the blessings ahead. … [Read more...]
New Year – Looking Back and Looking Forward
January is the month of “Janus.” Janus was the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions – a good image of this first month of the year. One face looks back on the year gone and the other looks forward to the new and uncertain one ahead. January is a reflective month – an opportunity to look back at the year behind us – letting go of our regrets and celebrating our joys, then we look forward also into the coming months. Many of us make well-meaning resolutions and hope we can achieve at least some of them.January is a transition time. – the liminal space between two years. William Bridges wrote a wonderful and interesting book about transitions, Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changesand The Way of Transition. Transition is a the process of letting go of the way things used to be and then taking hold of the way they subsequently become. One of his concepts I appreciated learning was the three phases of change/transitions:EndingThe … [Read more...]
Christmas Year-End Clutter – Sorted, Ordered and Transported
The living floor covered with ripped and shredded wrapping. Boxes tilting precariously, leaning to the right. Family still lounging in pajamas playing with their presents.Ah, Christmas morn. But slowly that day or the next, the Christmas clutter gets picked up and the front room returns to normal. Tired of leftovers, even the refrigerator receives a good cleaning. Then I begin eyeing the Christmas décor. I wonder what the current protocol is on how long to leave up all the decorations? I know I like to have most of it put away by end of the year or it too become clutter.I take the stack of Christmas cards and reread them one more time. The pile is moved by my chair in my office where I pray, read my morning devotions, and spend time with God. I select a card each day, praying for that person. What other year-end clutter needs to be sorted, ordered, and transported out of my life?· Like clothes that don’t fit and never will, is it time to let go of some hopes and dreams that seem … [Read more...]
What Would You Ask Jesus?
Once when I was on retreat, we introduced ourselves to each other by answering the question: if you were having lunch with Jesus, what would you ask Him? I was surprised by the answers – deep and personal, reflecting their doubts and fears. Many wanted to know how to know Him better and if they were doing ok in living their lives. As I write this blog week after week, I do pray for each of you as readers, but realized this week I have never ask you about your own spiritual journeys and explorations. Some of you do share those in the comments or by email and I love getting to know you better through those connections. But I am curious who you are and how you want to grow in the Lord. If you don’t want to share your answers publicly through the comment section, please feel free to send them to me by email (Jeanwise22@gmail.com)Looking forward to getting to know you better. What would YOU ask Jesus if given the opportunity? What do you really want to know that would help you on your … [Read more...]
The Pleasure of Your Company
When you are in love you want to spend time with that person. You let your eyes soak in every move they make, your ears cling to their every sound, and your heart just bursts with joy.I am in love.In love with my granddaughter, Kyla. She whooshed into my heart in June 2009 and continues to capture my attention whenever we are together. I watched her the other day. Stooping to pick up a crumb on the floor, studying it like a treasure from antiquity. She devours spaghetti with gusto and delicious delight. I giggled as she creates fun from an everyday object. Only a child’s heart and mind can see new possibilities in an ordinary humdrum of life. Each new day is a wonderful opportunity to learn and explore.Kyla went with us shopping the other day. I sat in the third row of the Suburban and even as she slept, snuggled in the arms of her car seat, I couldn’t keep my eyes from her. I enjoy just the pleasure of your company, Kyla, I thought. That phrase stuck with me – the pleasure of your … [Read more...]
Learning New Habits
“Ah-Choo!”Yesterday the lady in the pew in front of me sneezed. I watched her automatically cover her reaction by sneezing into the bend of her arm. Coughing into our sleeves has become the acceptable and proper way to sneeze. A proven way to control the spread of disease. Why even you-tube has a video telling the history of this new habit sweeping across the world.Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday we were all sneezing and coughing into our hands? How did we switch to this better alternative so quickly? Why are some good habits adopted faster than others? Why can’t I consistently exercise and eat healthy as easily as I have learned to cough into my sleeve?I have lots of questions and not too many answers, but this got me thinking about habits. Actually I spend some time reading and researching interesting facts about habits. A New York Times article, based upon the research by Andy Ryan says:“Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our … [Read more...]
